AN EXPERT SYSTEM IS DEFINED AS A COMPUTER PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR A PARTICULAR PIECE OF EQUIPMENT OR PLANT IN WHICH A QUESTION AND ANSWER FORM IS USED TO DIAGNOSE FAULTS AND ADVISE ON PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE. SUCH A SYSTEM MUST BE WRITTEN BY COLLABORATION BETWEEN SOMEONE WITH EXPERT KNOWLEDGE OF THE TYPE OF EQUIPMENT, A PRACTICAL ENGINEER, AND A SUITABLE SOFTWARE PROGRAMMER. TO ILLUSTRATE THE METHOD, AN EXAMPLE IS INCLUDED WHICH SHOWS THE SEQUENCE USED FOR A ROUTINE COOLING MAINTENANCE VISIT TO A CENTRIFUGAL WATER CHILLER. D.W.H.
