Summary

The design and lay-out of silencers for ventilation systems has been possible up to now only for experts and manufacturers. The estimation of the attenuation of absorptive silencers using the well known Piening formula, and the calculation of the attenuation by means of computer programmes and the so-called trapezoid diagrams, may deviate considerably from each other. However, the extended Piening formula presented in the paper may be used on any hand calculator and supplies the user with an estimation of the attenuation that meets all practical requirements.
