Factors affecting air ingress rates to a modern low temperature facility and methods to reduce the effects.

Number: pap. 144

Author(s) : MCVITTIE G., GILLIES A.

Summary

Air ingress at the doors and loading docks of chill and cold storage facilities is a key factor affecting efficient operation and stable temperature control. This paper will assess the effects of air leakage based on air flows measured at an operational facility. Total air change rates and resultant costs will be calculated. It will present practical guidance on factors that must be considered in the design of a new building and refrigeration plant. It will also give guidance to cold chain operators to further the understanding of this critical factor for efficient operation of a low temperature facility. Cost effective upgrades of existing facilities and recommendations for further developments will be presented.
