Factors affecting reciprocating compressor performance.

Author(s) : WOOLLATT D.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The author discusses the use of compressor indicator diagrams to diagnose faults and the effects of wear. Each of a number of common reasons for departure from the theoretical ideal are shown. These include the effects of clearance, valve loss, valve spring strength, valve inertia, piston ring, piston and rod packing leakage, valve leakage, gas pulsation and internal heat transfer to and from cylinder walls. These are all shown as isolated occurrences. Identifying problems from actual diagrams taken from operating compressors is possible if taken in conjunction with other indications, such as measurements of temperature. D.W.H.
