THE AUTHORS SET OUT TO DETERMINE AN EVALUATION PROCEDURE FOR MAXIMISING HEAT TRANSFER AGAINST PRESSURE DROP OR PUMPING POWER FOR FINNED TUBE EXCHANGERS. FOR ONE-ROW ARRAYS, THE CONCLUSION WAS POSITIVE. MAXIMISATION WAS ACHIEVED USING AS MANY TUBES AS POSSIBLE. FOR TWO-ROW ARRAYS THE EVIDENCE WAS LESS DECISIVE. IN THE SAMPLES CONSIDERED IT APPEARED THAT IN-LINE ARRAYS PERFORMED BETTER THAN STAGGERED ARRAYS. D.W.H.
