Summary

An algorithm is developed and used to calculate the forces and torques between a high Tc superconductor and a magnet for low fields. It is applied to the case of a finite cylinder and the limit of applicability is experimentally found. The first transition critical field is thus determined. This provides a useful tool for the engineering of magnet-superconductor levitating devices.
