Summary

The aim of this research was to study the effect of the air curtain flows on heat and mass characteristics in a cold room by calculating the velocity, temperature and moisture distribution in a cold room. The study was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation using a commercial CFD code (FLUENT 6.3). The CFD modelling techniques solved the continuity, momentum, energy, and species transport equations in addition to k-e model equations. Mesh sizes used in the present work exceeded 1,000,000 mesh volumes in all cases, as solution was independent on mesh sizes at these values. Throughout the investigations, the jet angle of the air curtain was varied at three cases of different volumetric flow rates to study its effect on the flow field through the cold room. Infiltration into the cold room and effectiveness of the air curtain was calculated in the different cases by determining the temperature distribution within the cold room.
