Fluorinated metal hydrides for heat pumps and refrigerators.

Summary

Because of the 5 major shortcomings inherently existing in hydriding alloy properties, any metal hydride applications such as thermal energy conversion devices have never been successful in practice, except in the case of nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries with small capacity which apply the rare earth nickel alloys. This paper will describe briefly in the first part the principles of thermal energy conversion systems, and point out in the second part the problems existing in the development of heat pumps and refrigerators in view of metal hydride properties and characteristics. The properties and characteristics of fluorinated hydriding alloys developed recently in this laboratory by a special fluorination technique are introduced briefly, as the fluorinated hydriding alloys have been found to solve most shortcomings and problems which are the keys to develop such devices commercially.
