Food moves through 136,000 grocery stores in the United States. Supermarkets account for about 4% of the US electrical energy consumption. Nearly 50% of this energy is used in refrigerated display cases, according to the Electric Power Research Institute. The supermarket sector absorbs about 100,000 low-temperature refrigerated display cases annually. About 8% of stores are remodeled, involving installation of new heating, ventilating and air-conditioning equipment.
