Summary

The theory of the greenhouse effect presents a long and interesting history going back to the beginning of the 19th century. In the paper the author presents some decisive steps, such as the thermodynamic revolution and transformation of the world's image by the Carnot machine, the "theory of the warming greenhouse" advanced by John Tyndall, the "biosphere" concept of Vladimir Vernadsy or the Gaya hypothesis of James Lovelock. Despite a lot of controversies, the greenhouse effect is currently considered as one of the best established theories in atmospheric science.
