Summary

WHEN HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS ARE USED TO SUPPLY THERMAL ENERGY FROM THE AIR FOR SPACE HEATING IN WINTER, THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE OF THE EVAPORATOR OFTEN FALLS BELOW 273 K (0 DEG C), THUS FROST DEPOSITION OCCURS. FROST FORMATION CANNOT BE TREATED SIMPLY AS A GROWTH OF UNIFORM SUBSTANCES SUCH AS ICE BECAUSE OF THE COMPLICATED NATURE OF A FROST LAYER. THE PAPER GIVES A REVIEW OF STUDIES ON FROST FORMATION AND DEFROSTING WITH REGARD TO HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS.
