Gamma irradiation for insect disinfestation damages native Australian cut flowers.

Summary
Some cut flowers from Australia are damaged by insects. Ionizing irradiation was applied to these flowers in order to kill the parasites. Different treatments were tried, but when disinfestation was successful, flowers vase life was often strongly reduced. Hence gamma irradiation cannot be yet considered as an appropriate treatment.
