GAS -ENERGY OF THE FUTURE.

Author(s) : BRECHT C.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE A. DESCRIBES THE NETWORK OF NATURAL GAS PIPELINES WHICH FEED WESTERN EUROPE, SOME SOURCES BEING AS FAR AWAY AS NORTH-EAST SIBERIA. HE ALSO DISCUSSES THE ESTIMATED USAGE OF GAS INTO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF SUPPLEMENTING SUPPLIES USING LIQUID GAS CARRIERS AND ALSO BY NEW PROCESSES FROM COAL. GAS IS ONE OF THE MOST EFFICIENT PRIMARY ENERGY SOURCES BOTH IN ITS TRANSMISSION AND ITS USE. FOR HEATING, A COMPRESSION TYPE, GAS-FUELED HEAT PUMP MAY PRODUCE AN EFFICIENCY FROM THE PRIMARY ENERGY OF 173%, COMPARED TO ABOUT 75% BURNING THE GAS DIRECT, OR 100% USING ELECTRICITY GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION APPLIED TO A HEAT PUMP.
