Summary
Applying low temperatures to medicine, particularly for the treatment of malignant lesions, is one of the "High Energy Treatments", with the best cost/benefit ratio. Tissue temperatures of -50 deg C or tissue impedance of 500 kilo-ohms can destroy the tumour. Cryosurgery provides two prominent services: in situ destruction of tumours which otherwise would be difficult to treat, and potential tumour-specific immunotherapy. Thus, cryosurgery should be incorporated into the multidisciplinary regimen against cancer. A total of 4,808 patients received cryosurgery from July 1968 to June 1991, 403 with malignant and 4,405 with benign lesions. The overall 1-year survival rate of the primary cancer patients was 63.3%; the 3-year rate, 47.7%; and the 5-year rate, 43.8%; even though most patients were suffering from advanced diseases.
