Summary
The grid independent, self-powered technology discussed in this paper delivers a heating system that operates free from the power grid while providing efficient heating for residential and commercial buildings. Several appliances were evaluated for power draw during ignition, operation and shutdown. A storage water heater with powered damper was selected, and different thermoelectric generator (TEG) placement locations and orientations were investigated to maximize the thermal-to-electric conversion efficiency while maintaining TEG durability. Several TEGs were analytically and experimentally evaluated based on their size, surface area and the thermal to power conversion rate before designing and fabricating a complete multi-TEG assembly for integration with the water heater. Tests were carried out over several days at various water draw levels. The TEGs generated enough power to charge a battery and run the powered damper equipped storage water heater unit without interruption by providing the required parasitic electrical power during start-up, shutdown and idling. Two weeks of continuous grid independent operation of the storage water heater equipped with a powered damper was demonstrated. The testing was robust and reliable with the TEGs and the associated self-powering components during these tests. In addition, more power than required was generated to be stored into a battery that could be utilized during grid interruptions. The technology demonstrated that integration of TEG modules can self-power the systems for long durations and offer a path to market for high efficiency systems that can lower the grid load especially during peak hours thereby lowering emissions and improving resiliency. The system can deliver grid resilient hot water and provide significant value to the end user by eliminating impacts of power interruption and enhancing comfort, convenience and productivity. Based on the results, it is believed the self-powered technology can be extended to boilers, furnaces and tankless water heaters and integrated with heat pump to increase the overall equipment efficiency. The technology has the potential to reduce the amount of dispatch power and peak power plant operation.
