Header end failures caused by hydraulic shock.

Author(s) : GLUCKMAN R.

Summary

Hydraulic shock is a phenomenon related to sudden changes in the velocity of liquid flowing in pipes. Whilst there is relatively little detailed reference to hydraulic shock in refrigeration literature, hydraulic shock has been the cause of numerous refrigeration plant failures. These failures have not always been correctly diagnosed as due to hydraulic shock. This paper provides some background information about the effects of hydraulic shock and gives recommendations about how pipework failures can be avoided.
