Summary

The presence of a toxic substance and its supposed effect need to be examined before assuming a connection. Most toxins are now classified according to limits of concentration, exposure times and the time taken for the symptoms to become apparent. If these factors are not present, then the cause of toxicity is uncertain. Also the observed effect may have been enhanced by a low level of stimulus or may have a different cause such as drugs taken by the subject. Other causes of toxicity may occur outside the workplace.
