Summary

The presence of a toxic substance and its supposed effects need to be examined before assuming a connection. Most toxins are now classified according to limits of concentration, exposure times and the time taken for the symptoms to become apparent. These factors help determine if, indeed, a toxin is responsible for the observed effects, since it is possible that they have been enhanced by a low level of stimulus or may have a different cause, such as drugs taken by the subject.
