HEAT EXCHANGERS IN LAKES. A FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR AN OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOL IN KARLSTAD.

Summary

THIS INVESTIGATION RELATES TO A STUDY OF THE FEASIBILITY OF USING A HEAT PUMP AND HEAT EXCHANGER TO RECOVER HEAT FROM ORSHOLM TARN (OUTSIDE KARLSTAD), AND USING IT TO HEAT THE ADJACENT ORSHOLM SWIMMING POOL, SHOWERS ETC. TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS ARE CONSIDERED. THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION SHOW THAT AT LEAST 600 MWH CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE LAKE BETWEEN THE MIDDLE OF MAY AND THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER (THE TIME DURING WHICH THE SWIMMING POOL IS OPEN), THROUGH PEL HOSE LAID WITHIN A 70X115 M AREA ON THE BED OF THE LAKE. THE NECESSARY ELECTRICAL DRIVE ENERGY IS ABOUT 200 MWH. ADDITIONAL ENERGY, AMOUNTING TO SOMEWHAT MORE THAN 200 MWH, IS REQUIRED (PRIMARILY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON) FROM THE EXISTING OIL-FIRED BOILER PLANT. THE PROPOSED HEAT EXCHANGER CONSISTS OF 35 PARALLEL HOSE LOOPS, EACH 230 M LONG, AND DIMENSIONED FOR A MAXIMUM POWER RATING OF 225 KW. AN ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL FOR A COMPACT HEAT EXCHANGER HAS N CONSIDERABLE IMPORTANCE HAS BEEN ATTACHED TO THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ENERGY FLOWS AROUND THE HEAT ABSORBER AND IN THE LAKE. THE CALCULATED COST SAVINGS REALISED BY THE INSTALLATION ARE ESTIMATED TO ABOUT SKR 25,000 PER YEAR, AS COMPARED WITH CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE EXISTING BOILER PLANT AT CURRENT OIL PRICES. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE ECONOMICS WOULD BE FURTHER IMPROVED BY PUMPING THE LAKE WATER DIRECTLY TO THE HEAT PUMP EVAPORATOR.
