Summary

In this study, phase change materials are used in a HVAC system. An experimental set-up was built in order to evaluate the thermal behaviour of the system when working in summer conditions. Salt hydrate PCM embedded in flat slab HDPE encapsulations are used in two PCM thermal energy storage units. The system uses two PCM storage units, one for heating and the other for cooling, to supply the thermal demand of a small house-like cubicle. The aim of the installation is to take advantage of the low electricity night tariff, so the PCM is charged at night and discharged during the day in order to use the thermal energy stored by the PCM. In this paper the experimental set-up is presented; different tests are being carried out in order to obtain the thermal analysis of the system.
