Summary

A MULTI-UNIT HEAT PUMP CAN BE CONNECTED TO SEVERAL INDOOR UNITS AND EACH UNIT CAN BE OPERATED SEPARATELY OR SIMULTANEOUSLY. AS RUNNING CONDITIONS CAN VARY, DEVICES ARE NEEDED TO CONTROL THE REFRIGERANT FLOW AND THIS CAN RESULT IN COMPLICATIONS WITH CONVENTIONAL UNITS. IN A NEWLY DEVELOPED MODEL, THE USE OF ELECTRONIC EXPANSION VALVES PROVIDED THE FOLLOWING IMPROVEMENTS: MICROCOMPUTER CONTROL OF THE OPENING OF AN ELECTRONIC EXPANSION VALVE GAVE THE COMBINED FUNCTIONS OF A SOLENOID VALVE, EXPANSION VALVE, CHECK VALVE AND STOP VALVE, THUS SIMPLIFYING THE PIPING. ALL REFRIGERANT CONTROL DEVICES WERE LOCATED IN THE OUTDOOR UNIT, THUS REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF REFRIGERANT, REDUCING THE OPERATING SOUND LEVEL OF INDOOR UNIT AND IMPROVING REFRIGERANT CIRCULATION TO EACH INDOOR UNIT.
