Summary

R1336mzz(Z) is a non-flammable and non-toxic hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) that is being considered as a potential alternative working fluid for a range of applications. These applications include centrifugal chillers, industrial high temperature heat pumps, and organic Rankine cycles. Although pool boiling is one of the primary heat transfer modes in shell-and-tube evaporators, there is still only limited data for R1336mzz(Z) due to its recent introduction. For this study, the pool boiling characteristics of R1336mzz(Z) were investigated using a closed-loop apparatus. To determine the heat transfer coefficients, measurements were performed using a heating block with a smooth aluminum surface under a range of heat fluxes. The results were then compared to predictions from various correlations. Additionally, a high-speed camera was employed to visualize and qualitatively analyze the pool boiling behavior of this next-generation low-pressure refrigerant.
