How natural is cold in 2010?

Summary

An overview of cooling systems in the Netherlands is presented. The largest systems (superior to 300 kg content) use predominantly ammonia as working fluid. Domestic systems (less than 1 kg) increasingly use hydrocarbons. Most medium size systems (from 1 to 300 kg) still use HCFCs and/or HFCs. Potential for the use of natural refrigerants in medium size systems is sufficient, particularly in certain market segments. Considerable growth is expected in indirect, compact systems with less average leakage percentages. Under favourable policy conditions a major shift towards natural refrigerants is feasible in the Netherlands, even to an extent that no virgin HFC material is needed beyond 2010, thus reducing emissions to acceptable low levels.
