HVAC CONTROLS IN LABORATORIES: A SYSTEMS APPROACH.

Summary

HVAC CONTROL SYSTEMS DESIGN FOR LABORATORY FACILITIES HAS BEEN INFLUENCED BY CHANGES IN ENERGY COSTS, NEW SENSOR TECHNOLOGY, AND THE INTRODUCTION AND ACCEPTANCE OF DISTRIBUTED DIGITAL CONTROL TECHNOLOGY. THESE CHANGES HAVE COMBINED WITH THE ACCEPTANCE OF VAV AIR-HANDLING SYSTEMS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONSERVING ENERGY WITHIN LABORATORIES (ESPECIALLY WITH FUME HOOD CONTROL) WHILE MAINTAINING PROPER SAFETY AND COMFORT LEVELS. THE PAPER REVIEWS SEVERAL CONTROL STRATEGIES. PROS AND CONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SOPHISTICATION ARE DISCUSSED.
