Hybrid renewable energy system for cold-chain infrastructure: A case study of Solar Ice maker in Maluku, Indonesia.

Summary

Small-scale fisheries, especially in remote coastal regions, rely on ice production to maintain the quality of their fish catch and prevent significant post-harvest losses. In Maluku, Indonesia, a solar-powered ice maker has been introduced, which we use as a case study. This study aims to determine the optimal scenario for improving power capability with a hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) that combines existing PV with wind and biogas to overcome the limitations of a single energy source, improve energy reliability, and enhance cost-effectiveness. HOMER was used to model and optimise HRES, which provided a comprehensive analysis of both technical and economic aspects. The optimised HRES improved load satisfaction to 99.9% while maintaining a low LCOE of 0.226/kWh. The sensitivity analysis shows that the system is more sensitive to changes in the discount rate and inflation rate than to changes in battery lifetime, battery SOC, and PV lifetime.
