Summary

A description is given of the Polaris mine of the Canadian company Cominco, located in an island near the North pole, which extracts 1 million tons of mineral per year from the permanently frozen underground ("permafrost") and produces 220,000 tons of concentrated zinc and 44,000 tons of concentrated lead. The living conditions of personnel and mineral extraction conditions are revealed. The Danfoss hydraulic components for the extraction equipment are listed; their quality is vital. The maintenance personnel is trained on the field. J.L.
