Summary
With the rising cost of energy, low-energy buildings, characterized by high thermal insulation and envelope air-tightness, are being generalized. The energy performance should nevertheless be performed without any compromise to occupants’ health and comfort. This paper aims at analyzing the influence of reducing envelope air leakage on the indoor air quality and the energy demand. A sensitivity study is then carried out through numerical simulations using the models of two types of residential buildings, by varying the envelope air-permeability value. It appears that improving the air-tightness can lead to better control of the airflows and the indoor air quality in the case of exhaust ventilation strategies, while the energy demand is hardly variable. On the contrary, when the dwelling is equipped with balanced ventilation systems, it is possible to save energy and improve the air quality in some cases, according to the level of air-tightness.
