Improved energy efficiency for domestic refrigerator/freezer using hydrocarbon mixtures (R290/R600a, R290/R600 and R600a/R600).

Summary

A modified vapor compression refrigeration cycle with an ejector (MVCRC) for a domestic refrigerator-freezer has energy saving potential by reducing the large compression ratio due to the large temperature difference between the fresh food section and the freezer section. In this study, a thermodynamic analysis for the optimum compositions of hydrocarbon mixtures R290/R600a, R290/R600 and R600a/R600, and cycle specifications was performed. In addition, the performance characteristics of the MVCRC cycle were predicted using R134a and various hydrocarbon mixtures in order to determine the best hydrocarbon mixture to be
used as the R134a substitute in the domestic refrigerator/freezer. The further simulation results indicate that there exists an optimal mixture composition for the modified cycle that could obtain the maximum COP. The R290/R600 mixture with 80% propane is the best drop in replacement for R134a in MVCRC cycle.
