In-situ swelling behaviour of polymer materials in sub- and supercritical carbon dioxide.

Number: 0023

Author(s) : GERMANUS J., JUNK M.

Summary

Polymers play an important role as sealing materials in refrigeration circuits. Knowledge of the interaction of these materials with refrigerants and refrigerant-oil mixtures is therefore of interest. The swelling behaviour of polymeric materials, especially elastomers is an important parameter for characterizing these materials for use in different applications of refrigeration.
With a new experimental setup it is shown that under the conditions of a CO2-operated refrigeration system, the swelling behaviour of elastomeric materials can be monitored in-situ in different fluids (gases, liquids, and supercritical fluids). The behaviour of different elastomers in CO2 is shown for the temperature range between 25 °C and 80 °C and pressures of up to 90 bar. In addition, experimental results of rapid gas decompression are presented.
