THIS IS A REPORT ON A CONFERENCE HELD AT WARWICK UNIVERSITY IN MARCH 1982. THE PROCEEDINGS CONSIST OF 30 PAPERS COVERING THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS ; DRYING APPLICATIONS ; INDUSTRIAL CASE STUDIES ; COMPONENT STUDIES ; STEAM GENERATION ; WORK IN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY ; SYSTEM STUDIES. IN THE CONFERENCE OPENING ADDRESS, THE AUTHOR HIGHLIGHTED THREE MAIN CATEGORIES OF APPLICATIONS, NAMELY, SWIMMING POOLS, REPLACEMENT OF DOMESTIC OIL BOILERS, AND INDUSTRIAL PROCESS USES. THE POTENTIAL MARKETS IN THESE THREE AREAS WERE WORTH, RESPECTIVELY F 50 MILLION, F 125 MILLION AND F 150 MILLION. THE BULK OF ENERGY SAVING DUE TO HEAT PUMPS WOULD BE IN THE SWIMMING POOL AND INDUSTRIAL CATEGORIES. IN ADDITION TO ENERGY SAVINGS IN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS, OTHER BENEFITS COULD ARISE EG WATER SAVING AND IMPROVED PROCESS CONDITIONS. E.W.S.
