Summary

A SIMPLE AND INEXPENSIVE ALTERNATIVE TO THE LIQUID HELIUM BOLOMETER FOR OBSERVING LASER INDUCED VIBRATIONAL EXCITATION IN MOLECULAR BEAMS IS REPORTED. A ROOM-TEMPERATURE PYROELECTRIC DETECTOR IS USED TO DIRECTLY MEASURE THE INCREASE IN MOLECULAR ENERGY RESULTING FROM LASER EXCITATION. WITH THIS DETECTOR, LINE BROADENING EFFECTS HAVE BEEN USED TO STUDY TRANSLATIONAL FREEZING IN FREE-JET EXPANSIONS.
