Summary

THE PHASE STATE OF ERYTHROCYTE CYTOSOL AT LOW TEMPERATURES WAS STUDIED USING SPIN PROBE EPR. AFTER THE CYTOSOL VITRIFICATION ALTERATIONS WERE SHOWN TO OCCUR DOWN TO 191 K (-82 DEG C) DUE TO RECONSTRUCTIONS OF HYDRATED HAEMOGLOBIN MACROMOLECULES AND FREEZING-OUT OF WATER BOUND TO CELLULAR COMPONENTS. TEMPERATURE AT WHICH RECONSTRUCTIONS TOOK PLACE DEPENDED ON THE PRESENCE OF GLYCEROL IN ERYTHROCYTE SUSPENSIONS.
