Summary

A set of duct geometries under investigation included circular, rectangular, square, triangular, sine and a set of longitudinal finned circular tubes. The "best" geometry from the point of view of the area goodness factor may be the worst from the standpoint of thermodynamic criteria. For finned circular tubes, the competing irreversibilities may cause the existence of the minimum entropy generation number. In the case of laminar flow, the presence of minima is not so pronounced, i.e. within the range of Reynolds numbers that correspond to the laminar regime the minima are either a very weak or do not exist.
