Summary

CLASSICAL CALCULATION OF THE CRITICAL MASS FLOW RATE OF A GAS EXPANDING IN A CONVERGING NOZZLE APPLY WITH DIFFICULTY IN THE CASE OF A DRY SATURATED VAPOUR, SINCE CONDENSATION IS LIKELY TO APPEAR DURING THE EXPANSION. AFTER RESTATING THE PRINCIPLES OF THIS CALCULATION, A MORE RIGOROUS METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR A FLUID INITIALLY IN THE DRY SATURATED VAPOUR STATE. THE FIRST RESULTS OBTAINED FOR EIGHT FLUIDS OF CURRENT INDUSTRIAL USE, SHOW THAT NAPIER'S LAW, INITIALLY ESTABLISHED FOR WATER, MAY BE GENERALIZED. BESIDES,THE CRITICAL EXPANSION RATE IS ALMOST CONSTANT AND INDEPENDENT OF THE NATURE OF THE FLUID. THESE RESULTS MAY BE DIRECTLY USED IN DESIGNING SAFETY-VALVES.
