Summary

ISO is one of Europeen Space Agency's big scientific satellite projects. It has been built around a telescope with a diameter of 60 cm, cooled to around 3 K by circulation of gaseous helium. It evaporates through a phase separator, a 2250-litre toroidal vessel of superfluid helium at 1.8 K, that allows 18 months of automatic operation in space for astronomic observation. The whole satellite is 5.3 metres high by 2.5 meters in diameter and weighs 2400 kg, 310 kg of it being helium. The project is reaching its final stage (building and testing of the flight model). The launch is scheduled for 1995. After a general description of the satellite, cryogenic test results are presented, as well as the current state of development.
