Summary

Legionnaires' disease has not disappeared - in fact, outbreaks may appear to be increasing in number due to improved medical surveillance. Recent outbreaks overseas have included one at Barrow-in-Furness, UK, with 146 cases including seven deaths, and others in Spain, France, the Netherlands and several states in the USA. Closer to home, a recent outbreak in Auckland, New Zealand, accounted for 14 cases, fortunately without fatalities.
