Summary

THE FOKKER-PLANCK EQUATION FOR THE DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION OF THE PHASE AND VOLTAGE OF A JOSEPHSON JUNCTION IS SOLVED AND AN EXACT EXPRESSION FOR THE LIFETIME OF THE RESISTIVE STATE OF THE JUNCTION IS FOUND. IF THE CURRENT FLOWING THROUGH THE JUNCTION IS DECREASED SLOWLY AND LINEARLY WITH TIME, THE CURRENT DISTRIBUTION ON FLUCTUATIONAL SWITCHING OF THE JUNCTION FROM THE RESISTIVE TO SUPERCONDUCTING STATE IS OF A GAUSSIAN SHAPE.
