Summary
THE PROPERTIES OF TUNNEL JUNCTIONS WITH AMORPHOUS LAYERS AND ALSO OF POINT AND BRIDGE JOSEPHSON JUNCTIONS WITH AN AMORPHOUS SURROUNDING ARE INVESTIGATED. EQUATIONS ARE DERIVED FOR TUNNELING INVOLVING TWO-LEVEL SYSTEMS, THE CASES OF QUASIPARTICLE TUNNELING IN S-I-N JUNCTIONS (N IS THE NORMAL METAL) AND OF JOSEPHSON TUNNELING IN S-I-S JUNCTIONS BEING CONSIDERED. IT IS SHOWN THAT INELASTIC TUNNELING LEADS TO THE APPEARANCE OF AN ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE NONLINEARITY OF THE S-I-N JUNCTION VOLT-AMPERE CHARACTERISTIC.
