Summary
Several studies have shown that offering options for personal control to office workers results in increased wellbeing, more comfort, less Sick Building Syndrome symptoms and better performance. But how to provide personal control over the indoor climate in the open office landscape that the modern organisation wants these days? The authors have developed a new local climatisation system that also provides for local illumination. If allows for personal control at workstation level over heating, cooling, ventilation, daylight penetration and lighting level. This paper describes this new so called LOCLILI system. Where LOCLILI stands for ‘LOcal CLImatisation and LIghting system’. First some background information is presented (e.g. the performance criteria that were defined at the start of the project). Furthermore, the paper describes how the system was designed and tested. The preliminary conclusion is that this new climatisation concept is quite effective in creating a work environment that is healthy, comfortable, productivity enhancing and possibly also energy saving. The concept could be used in other buildings and other countries too to provide for a close to ideal indoor environment for the modern office worker.
