Summary
Commercial production of cut flowers on Okinawa started in 1972 and has increased year by year. The freight traffic was larger than the capacity of the scheduled air freight from Okinawa to mainland Japan during peak season at the end of 1970s. In 1981, the refrigerated marine container was introduced to transport vegetables and cut flowers from Okinawa. In 1983, the chartered air freight began to carry cut chrysanthemums for Buddhist ceremonies in the spring equinox. In 1989, vacuum precoolers for cut flowers were installed and began to operate. The Okinawan cut flower industry overcame the distance problem in shipment.
