Long-term preservation of red blood corpuscle for transfusions.

Langzeitkonservierung von menschlichen roten Blutkörperchen zur Transfusion.

Author(s) : DKV, SPUTTEK A., MINGERS B.

Summary

Cellular as well as plasmatic components of the human blood can be stored in the frozen state for decades. The handling of the cryopreservation process for human red blood cells could be simplified using a hydroxyethyl starch and liquid nitrogen technique. The procedure, developed at a laboratory scale, has been applied successfully in animal studies and in clinical trials with patients. However, the application of the procedure to an industrial scale will be a technical challenge.
