Seed conservation under –196°C in liquid nitrogen. The use of paper tubes for seed cryopreservation.

Number: pap. n. 17

Author(s) : ARAPETYAN E., USANTENKO Y., BODNAR L., et al.

Summary

The effects of storage at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (LN, –196°C) on the viability of Allium cepa seeds was investigated using sealed paper tubes for seed storage at low temperatures. Seed germination was studied after its storage in LN2 during 2 and 4 weeks. The final germination percentage of seed samples after cryopreservation yielded similar results and did not show significant differences in growth and development of seedlings. This study demonstrates that seed with low moisture content packing in paper could be used for seed preservation in LN2.
