Summary
An option for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions in the field of refrigeration is to apply an alternative refrigeration technology such as magnetic cooling. Magnetic cooling is based on the reversible magneto-caloric effect. Cooling can be obtained by magnetising and demagnetising MCE-materials with permanent magnets, so very little electrical energy is needed. Furthermore, any fluid, such as water or air can be used as the heat transfer medium. Among the advantages of magnetic cooling are: silent operation, application of environmentally friendly heat transfer media and energy efficiency. On the other hand it is still an immature technology, unknown by most manufacturers and multiple step systems are needed to bridge a sufficient temperature gradient at acceptable cooling capacities.
