Summary

A PROTOTYPE APPARATUS WAS CONSTRUCTED. GADOLINIUM DISC OF 20 MM DIAMETER X 10 OR 20 MM THICKNESS WAS USED AND MAGNETIZED BY STEP-PROMOTING MAGNET WITH SAMARIUM-COBALT COMPOUND POLE-PIECES. IT PROVIDES MAGNETIC FIELD OF 4 TO 6 KILO-OERSTEDS, AND GIVES RISE TO T NOT HIGHER THAN 1.2 K ADIABATICALLY ON THE GADOLINIUM SPECIMEN. IN ORDER TO OBTAIN CONSIDERABLE LOW TEMPERATURES, 4 OR 6 GADOLINIUM SPECIMENS WERE THERMALLY CONNECTED VIA THERMAL SWITCH IN CASCADE SERIES.
