Summary
MALONE REFRIGERATION USES A LIQUID IN SINGLE PHASE NEAR ITS CRITICAL POINT AS THE REFRIGERANT IN A STIRLING OR BRAYTON CYCLE REFRIGERATOR. THE LOW DEGREE OF LIQUID VOLUME CHANGE MAKES THE COMPRESSOR SIZE AS SMALL AS THAT FOR NORMAL VAPOUR COMPRESSION, AND THE LIQUID TO LIQUID HEAT EXCHANGERS ARE MUCH SMALLER. A LABORATORY REFRIGERATOR USING THIS TECHNIQUE SHOWS PROMISE AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO VAPOUR COMPRESSION. AS THE REFRIGERANTS AVAILABLE CAN BE SAFE AND HAVE ZERO OZONE DEPLETION AND GLOBAL WARMING FACTORS, IT MAY BE WORTH FURTHER DEVELOPMENT FOR A CFC-FREE FUTURE. D.W.H.
