Summary

Kitasato University Hospital Bone Bank (KUBB) was developed in 1971. The KUBB ethical rules and technical manual were completely revised and approved by the Committee of Ethics of Kitasato University Hospital in 1994. From 1971 to 1993, 315 frozen bone allografts were performed in the Department of orthopaedic surgery. Since April 1994, radiation sterilization for freeze-dried bones was introduced. During the last 2 years, 103 packs of the radiation-sterilized freeze-dried bones were grafted for treatment of bone defects in 55 patients.
