Maritime sustainability: 10-Years on, world’s first MEGI conversion retrofit in shipping.
Number: 55
Author(s) : SAEED M. A.
Summary
This presentation, along with the accompanying technical paper, aims to highlight key aspects of the dual-fuel conversion of the LNG tanker Rasheeda. Although the conversion was completed nearly a decade ago, the lessons learned remain highly relevant today. At the time, industry was experiencing the introduction of Emission Control Areas, efforts were focused on reducing fuel sulfur content. Since then, the demand for environmental stewardship has continued to grow, driven by increasingly stringent regulations and evolving environmental requirements To remain commercially competitive throughout a vessel's service life under the evolving regulatory landscape, retrofits and modifications will be essential for ship owners and operators. These may include conversions to alternative low-emission fuels, installation of energy-saving technologies, hull modifications to reduce resistance, and other similar upgrades. Given the maritime sector's limited experience with implementing and operating such solutions at-scale, the industry will
continue to face challenges and is likely to stay on a learning curve for the foreseeable future. Firstof- its-kind retrofits, such as the one presented here, play a critical role in advancing the industry's transition toward sustainable operations.
