Summary

TO USE RARE EARTH MAGNETS IN COMBINATION WITH SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS, SOME MECHANICAL PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN STUDIED AT LOW TEMPERATURE. THE ELASTIC MODULUS AND THE BREAKING STRESS WERE MEASURED FOR NEODYMIUM-IRON-BORON SINTERED MAGNETS AT 4, 77 AND 300 K. THE VALUES INCREASE AT LOW TEMPERATURES (10-20%). EIGHT SAMPLES WERE TESTED UNTIL RUPTURE. THE SINTERED NATURE OF THE MAGNETS EXPLAINS THE RELATIVELY BROAD DISPERSION OF THE RESULTS AND THEIR BRITTLE BEHAVIOUR.
