IMPORTANCE OF CRYOGENIC COOLING IN SPACE APPLICATIONS. ASSOCIATED PROBLEMS WITH THE USE OF CRYOGEN. ADVANTAGES OF A MECHANICAL COOLER. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FOUR POSSIBLE FUTURE EUROPEAN MISSIONS (METEOSAT SECOND GENERATION, POLAR PLARF FIRST, ISO). DESIGN OF A 80 K COOLER BASED ON A THERMODYNAMICAL SPLIT STIRLING CYCLE, IN WHICH WORK IS DONE IN COMPRESSING GAS INSIDE A COMPRESSOR. THIS COOLER ACHIEVES LONG LIFE AND HIGH RELIABILITY. IT IS HOPED THAT A 20 K COOLER, MUCH SIMILAR TO THE 80 K COOLER, SHOULD BE SPACE-QUALIFIED AT THE END OF 1991.
