Summary

The selection criteria for secondary refrigerants to be used in indirect systems are discussed. Where possible, quantified comparisons are given for the different media. Transport properties (volumetric heat capacity, heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop) are emphasized and discussed both for secondary refrigerants without phase change (e.g. calcium chloride and potassium formate and d-limonene) and with phase change (ice-slurries and CO2). CO2 appears to be much better than the standard secondary refrigerants. Ice slurries are also well-suited to high-temperature applications. Potassium formate shows promising energy consumption patterns.
